A Vibrating, Silent Metronome?

If you have trouble getting students to use a metronome in their practice, then this new piece of music technology might be just the answer.

Many of us struggle to help our students feel and understand beat, pulse and rhythm and so I’m always on the lookout for ways that we can help.

The Soundbrenner Pulse is a wearable, vibrating metronome that looks like a watch and I was pleased to receive a device to review a few months ago.

Basically, instead of ticking out loud like a normal metronome, this one vibrates so only the wearer can feel it.

It opens the doors to a whole lot of possibilities in the piano teaching studio.

Here’s the story of Soundbrenner:

Advantages of Soundbrenner

There are lots of things I like about the Soundbrenner Pulse:

  • Helps students feel rather than hear the pulse. While both are important, an innate feeling of beat is vital for musicians.
  • The app allows you to change the meter, accents and groupings so you can explore unusual time signatures, swing, etc.
  • It’s fully customisable – vibration levels, colours, etc.
  • Comes with two sizes of band so you can wear it on your legs, arms – wherever.
  • You can sync 5 of these devices together to create a group ‘click track’ which is great for performing in bands and much easier than setting up a click track with headphones.
  • Because it’s silent (and you can even turn the flashing light off), students can perform with this without anyone knowing.
  • Students enjoy the experience of using it which means they’re more likely to practice with it.
